Whistler Mountain

Up the Gondola
Uploaded by M+MD

On Monday we headed up to Whistler in the Rockies. It is about a 2 hour drive from Vancouver. It is where some of the Vancouver Winter Olympics events will be held. The drive up is spectacular. It was a beautiful day when we arrived - over 25 degress and bright sunshine. We got the Gondola from the village to the Roundhouse, which is just over 6,000 ft. It was a little cooler up top but still warm. We hiked the last 900 feet to Little Whistler summit. At the top there was a tea room which did not sell coffee! The views all around were breat-taking. It was such a clear day you could see for miles and miles in every direction. There was even a little snow.

The main thing about whistler I remember (and we didn't stop) was that that it's the only McDonalds that isn't allowed have the great big golden arches (Big M) hoisted over the shop (allegedly). The village - if I recall, looks like something out of a Santa's toy town scene - think Polar Express. And building regulations are notoriously restrictive. The only other thing this geek knew about whistler was that it was the code name for the next/previous Microsoft Windows release at the time when we were there circa 1999 I think. But it does look fab.

Other ski/holiday resorts as you go north have also been used for a similar MS naming purposes, we passed by a few as we headed north on our travels. Must dig out my photos, but mean while very much enjoying yours.

The closest we came to a bear was passing some … er … “dropping” on a trail we hiked in Washington state. Some local mountain bikers got great pleasure in telling us to look out for the bear evidence as they speed of in the opposite direction!! This lean Irish man wasn’t too concerned and anyway – you only have to outrun the company your in – and she wasn’t my wife AT THE TIME.
