St Kilians Schulball

Lisa's Debs - also known as the Schulball. We had a great night. Unlike most schools, Kilians has a tradition of inviting the parents. Of course the debutantes went on to a nightclub after. We went home and waited like dutiful parents. Lisa was home before 6.00 am! So we could finally get to sleep. Linda Golden, their English teacher, picks a poem each year - this year it was Thomas Hardy. It brings me back to my leaving cert year. Lyonesse was on our course. I remember Hardy as a pretty boring poet. He seemed a bit self obsessed. Anyway he wasn't expected to come up on the Leaving Cert in 1974, and as as far as I can remember, he didn't. Eliot and Prufrock was much more fun. But reading the poem now I can see a relevance that wasn't there 30 years ago. When I came back from Lyonesse with magic in my eyes"
