Morzine 2008 - Day 7 Saturday 29 March

We had a lie in until 9 and we needed it was too. After breakfast we called the shuttle and headed for the ski shop. As I was walk up the hill to the bubble with my skis on my shoulder and my boots on I felt a twinge in my right knee and thigh - I suddenly realised I had forgotton my magic knee bandage and thigh strap. There really was no point in going on the last big day's skiing without all the help I could muster.

Morzine From Above, Uploaded by M+MD

Especially as today I was going to conquer my Nemesis from last year - that simple blue run called Crocus. I had done it with the class on Thursday - but it nearly killed me again - or so it seemed at the time.

So the others went on ahead and Mags and I said that we would meet up with them later. We gave Highlife a call and they gave us a lift to back to the chalet. I got what I needed and Highlife left is back directly to the ski-lift. That's service. As we were getting on the ski-lift I realised I had dropped my goggles when we were putting on our skis. What a morning and we hadn't even started yet!

We agreed that the best solution was to ski down Piste B - now that is a sure sign of progress. Piste B was the scene of many of my falls on Monday and also quite a few of my scary moments! But now I was ready to go on down first thing!

We had an uneventful run down - it is quite a long run and on reflection not so difficult the last mile is just a pleasant run down. But after all that - no goggles - "c'est la vie". We got the ski lift back up and we then got the Beledere lift again because I now felt warmed up and brave enough to take on the Crocus run down to Les Gets. We rang Deirdre - they were heading for Les Gets my a more roundabout route. So we arranged to meet in half an hour or so and the Chavanne express lift.

Heading for Crocus, Uploaded by M+MD

I passed the spot on Crocus where I came a cropper last year. and just continued on down. There is a slope at the end of the Crocus run that is wide and a a little steeper but this time it was not a problem, no side-slipping just turns and traverses and soon we were down. Then the Piste joins another Blue run - Bruyere and there is a tunnel under a road followed by a long straight run which does speed up. But its a nice run and at the end there is a with a steeper slope just before we arrive into Les Gets. This was a little troublesome earlier in the week. It was where I took my skis off and walked the last 100 metres. Today it was ok, just a little nervous but I just side-slipped out of trouble and soon we were down.

I did it!

We took the skis off and walked down to a café to wait for the others. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine and blue sky. Fortunately I had taken the light warm jacket that we brought in Whistler last year. My eyes had coped with the glare without goggles but I thought I had better get a pair of sunglasses. There was a sports shop beside the café and I found a nice pair there. We talked to Dee on the phone and she suggested that we go up to La Rosta for lunch. Peter had told us about a lovely restaurant at the top. So we left the café and put back on our skis and waited at the bottom of the slope. It didn't look so bad from here!

Soon they arrived and we all headed up the Chavanne Express chairlift.

Chris Arrives with Style, Uploaded by M+MD

We reached the top and Deirdre and Chris guided is down the Blue run Violettes. Its a nice run that bring you down to the top of a valley with five lifts going up two opposite ridges. We took the lift for La Rosta whic is higher than Pleney at 1665 metres. The lift travels over the Black run called Yeti. We could see that we were a long way for bering ready to even think about a Black run! The real problem is the mounds of snow called moguls. From the top of La Rosta we skied down about 50 metres to the restaurant which Peter and Deirdre recommended. We got these enormous sandwiches each sandwich was a huge bun containing two burgers and a load of chips!

There was a big crowd of fellow Highlifers there, including the sister-in-law of a former house-mate in Dublin and her husband who had been a colleague of mine in The Sunday Tribune - its a small world. After lunch we headed back down to the 5 lifts down Campanule a supposed Blue run. However to get to the Blue part there is a short steep slope full of moguls. The problem with moguls is that all of the skis don't all touch the ground - you can be left bouncing on air and as a result turning is even harder than usual. We made down that bit and thereafter it was an easy if rather narrow, run down. We then took the Ranfoilly Express to the mountain on the other side. Le Ranfoilly is 1850 metres high. There is a fantastic view of Mount Blanc from the top. Deirdre was just standing minding her own business and she made some movement and just toppled over!

Dee takes a Tumble
Uploaded by M+MD

From Ranfoiilly we took the narrow Blue, Genfiane which goes all the way down to the top of the Chavanne Express. Next we had the Indian Run - a nice easy run for children of all ages.

We even stopped for warpaint and photographs. Deirdre managed to take me out with a sneaky side attack! The we went up our first button lift where you sit on a button seat and get dragged along on your skis. In fact the truck is not to sit but to stand and hold on. It was a short lift which allowed us to go down the Buffalo run. At the end of that run we we back up the La Croix chair lift again to the top of the Chavanne Express and from there we went down the wide Bruyere run which leads down to the bottom of Crocus. It's a great run with a long straight part where you have to allow the speed to build up, because if you run out of momentum near the bottom there is a lot of pushing or walking. At the end there is that steepish bit going down to the Folliets chairlift.

A Long day - Crocus done - ready for home, Uploaded by M+MD

This was to bring us back to Pleney. We then skied down Piste N back to Nabor and down Piste B all the way to the bottom. I was pretty knackered, but why not it was after 4.30 and we had been skiing all day. Piste B - so difficult at the start of the week - was easy now, even though I was tired - it's such a shame we are going home to-morrow. At the bottom we will have to say goodbye to skiing for another year. We were on the home stretch on Piste B when one of the bindings on Lisa's ski sheared right off the ski. She was doing some fancy manouvre, with a jump in behind a pole, at the time. She fell over and instead of the bindings coming off the boot, they came off the ski. Its pretty much the same effect - they are designed to come loose (rather than break your ankle!). She wasn't hurt, she was just so disappointed not to get the last 500 metres of the last run home.

Saturday Evening, Morzine, Uploaded by M+MD

We had less than 500 metres to go and we were skiing like experts. Luckilly there was a path down to the road. We took her skis and poles and she walked back to the ski shop. By the tme we finished and were down at the shop she was waiting for us. We returned our boots and skis. Deirdre and Chris have a late flight home to-morrow and so they extended their gear for another day.

So home we went, tired but buzzing from what had been a fantastic day's skiing. We travelled an amazing 25+ kilometres on skis that day and if you take in the ground covered by skilifts, its probably double that. We had our last Hot-Tub and Sauna. It wasn't really a case of being sore by now - we were over that - it was just that we were tired after a long day of exercise.

Dinner tonight was roast pork and again Ronan excelled. We started some packing and had a last reasonably early night - we were real too tired for much activity! I awoke early on Sunday morning - it wasn't yet dawn - there was just a little light in the clear sky and I caught the crescent moon above the snow slope - MAGIC- just like this week.

Morzine 2008 - Day 6 Friday 28 March

Woke up at 6 to a blue bright sky. I took a couple of early photographs - interesting light early mornings.

Called at 7.30 as usual. Still a bright sky. It looks like weather-wise we have had it all this week - snow and sunshine. We have the usual breakfast but were slower than usual getting started and by the time we got to the bubble the queue was not so long.

We arrived up to find that our class was gone! We were only about 5 minutes late. Lisa and Senan had gone up the chair lifts and arrived 2 minutes after us. There group was also gone. They headed down for the Belvedere lift with intention of heading over to Les Gets as that included going down the dreaded (psychologically) Crocus run, that was not for us. In any event we would just slow them down. So we went down to the Nabor lift for an easy run around.

We were both pretty wooden and un-coordinated and were finding it just a little scary! Our legs wouldn't do what the brain instructed and the brain wasn't sure what to do anyway, so maybe the legs were right!

Mags stopped to fix her boots ad I took off my skis and walked the 50 metres to the top of Pleney. At 1550 metres this little hill is taller than our Carantoohill - the highest mountain in Ireland! It was a beautiful vista all around and today we could see Mount Blanc - its about 15 kilometres as the crow flies, but it is usually covered in mist. I took some pictures and headed back to Mags.

Just a little puzzled and unsure of ourselves we made our way to the end of the Belvedere lift and enjoyed the view some more. Then we stopped at Le Vaffieu and had a coffee to collect ourselves. One thing sure it was a blessing that we had missed our class because by know I would have been in the horrors with this brain and these legs. After coffee we did the run down to Nabor lift - our old familiar warm-up run. At Nabor We felt brave enough to try the Piste D run down to Les Mouilles.

Taking it Easy, Uploaded by M+MD

We went back around to do it again and we met up with our class! "Just in time for the test" said Joseph. They had been down in the direction of Nyon. So we joined them down the familiar Piste D almost to Les Mouilles and then traversed across to Piste C and around to the Atray ski lift. There ESF Ski School had the award ceremony. Of course we all had passed and the test was nothing other than keeping up with the group or just enduring the 5 days! Then we had some Kir and cheese and sauscisson (salami). The kids hadn't found their group but most of the ESF groups were there. We located their instructor and collected their certificates. Then we rang them and they skied down to meet us.

"I Made It!"

Graduation over we headed back to the top on the rickety Atray ski lift. It stopped for a few minutes near the top. Mags had gone on ahead and I remembered that she had trouble with this lift on Wednesday.. When we got off we found out that the reason for the stop was not Mags but the bar had bounced back down as Lisa and Senan were getting off and the footrest had caught Lisa by the neck. She was not hurt though she was shaken. Senan had fallen hard on his bum. I think that is the end of Piste C for us. The newer chairlifts have a much better design - the balance of the bar almost carries it up by itself. We stopped by Pleney for cocas and beer and I had a sandwich. We heard from Katy - her exam had gone well.

After lunch we were ready for more skiing. The tiredness was going away and the stamina increasing. I even managed to take Piste B home! Chris took this video of Lisa going down a small part of the Piste B stretch.

Friday night we were invited to Deirdre's friends daughters 18th birthday celebration. They are in Les Gets for 10 days. We had Champagne in their friend's Tim and Sue's chalet and then we walked down to the restaurant with some snowball skirmishes on the way! There were 18 of us for dinner. We had a lovely meal including what Roisin called "Hot Rocks, Hot Rocks" - steak self-cooked on the stone. The birthday cake arrived with candles that were more like fireworks. Lots of signing of happy birthday in a couple of languages. We finished up with the men settling the bill over a interesting local eau de vie called "Genepays".

Morzine 2008 - Day 5 Thursday 27 March

Today Katy flies home. But as the taxi doesn't pick her up until 12.50 she gets an unexpected half day extra of skiing. We have to get a half day ski pass for her but that's ok. We had the usual breakfast at the usual time and were at our ski class at 9.30 on the button.

Snowing

More Snow
Uploaded by M+MD

We have stopped taking the bubble and are now taking the ski chairs - its a little slower but there is no queue and no stairs and your skis are on when you arrive. As a bonus there is a little warm up ski as we move about 500 metres to the Mouille lift.

Today's lesson was an excursion over to Les Gets - there is only one way to Les Gets - its down the run called Crocus where I pulled a muscle this ending my holiday last year. It started ok and there was much more snow than last year and soon I had passed the place where I did the spectacular tumble last year. Then there was a long wide run down with pretty heavy snow. I started to get a bit spooked and was a lot slower than the rest. Then we continued down a long straight run - that was ok but then on the last few slopes down to Les Gets I really got spooked. Joseph tried to take me under his wing but I'm afraid that it really didn't help much. I explained to him that the problem was in my head. He misunderstood and thought that I had a headache and had probably drunk too much last night!

The last 500 metres was just too much for me. I was trying to side slip all the way down but even that wasn't working. The others were all waiting for me - in the end I just took off my boots and walked the last 100 metres. At least I was down. I said to Mags as we got on the waiting chairlift that I was going to quit the class as I wasn't enjoying it and it wasn't fair to hold the class back. But as we were on the fast chairlift up to the top of Chavanne there was very little I could do about it.

Les Dents Blanches, Uploaded by M+MD

I was very nervous at the top of Chavenne - the others went on ahead. But I took my own pace and talked myself into using the full width of the slope - that way I got closer to the bottom each time! My big problem was my left-hand turns when I have to put pressure on the right leg. I think it's because I hurt that leg a little on some of my falls on Monday afternoon. Whatever the problem my right-hand turns became more confident but as I travelled from left to right across the slope I became increasingly worried about my left turn, then I would think that if I faced down the mountain for my turn I would just continue going down, faster and faster and out of control! My reaction to this irrational fear was to stop and look down! But stopping doesn't help - it only makes the turn even scarier! But the slope was wide and the traverses long so I managed to talk my way down and felt ok. Anyway we were still not at the lift to Pleney and so I still had no choices!

This time I got the chance to explain to Joseph that I did not have a pain in my head but that I had fell and hurt myself the last time down Crocus and that my problem was psychological. "ah phychologique, now I understand".

We went up a chairlift and did the same run again but this time we returned to the bottom of Crocus and got the lift back to Belvedere. From there I was back on familiar territory and was relaxed and much more confident - if only I could bottle that confidence I would be fine! We went down Piste D and then on to Piste C and down through some new snow - nearly fell over but didn't! We took the old lift at Atray to finish the day. The older lifts are not as well designed and it hit me a whack as I was getting off!

Lesson over we met up with the kids. Katy had got away ok and we got regular reports - I'm at the chalet; I'm in the taxi etc. We had some lunch and talked to Deirdre on the mobile. Soon enough Deirdre and Roisin skied in. Deirdre had arranged a private lesson for Mags and I from 2 to 4 with James, a friend of their friends in Les Gets. We decided to take one hour each.

My knee was killing me so I decided that I should get a knee support bandage. I took the bubble down and bought a knee and a thigh wrap. They made a big difference. Mags got on great in the first hour skiing down Piste B to the end. She was buzzing with confidence. James started the same procedure with me - poles out turn like you are driving a car. But to be honest I was too nervous and too slow and just to scared of the left-hand turns to be able to operate with poles out in front of me. So we dropped that. He worked on my side-slipping and pretty much sorted that out. Side slipping is a great solution when you are stuck on a steep slope - just to go straight down without any left-hand turns!! Then he talked me through the left-hand turns. "you've got to look down the hill" James said. "That's easy to say" I respond, "but I'm afraid that when I turn down the hill that I will just keep going." James advise to do a long snowplough turn and to try to break the down hill ski by leaning on it as hard as possible. My nerve went a couple of times - but I side slipped my way out of trouble and got over it. We made it all the way to the bottom - the last kilometre of Piste B is nice and calm.

Chalet Myrtille, Uploaded by M+MD

We went back up to meet Mags and Deirdre at the top. They took Piste B home while I waited for Chris and the others. The kids went down Piste B while. Chris took the Red run straight down under the bubble. I was knackered and took the bubble back.

At home we followed the usual routine of Hot Tub, followed by Sauna. It really did the trick. The dinner was again fantastic. We insisted that Peter and Ronan sing a song or act out a charade before they left. They were reluctant actors but they were good sports. All in all they looked after us very well. The food was always excellent and the wine glass always full.

We met up with Joseph at 9.30. He was expecting me, but not Mags. He said "No Lady you will slow down the group - this not your level". But Mags stood her ground and explained that her boots were wrong on Monday. He agreed to let her join but that if she was not at the right level she would have to go back to Francine. So we started off. He is a very methodical teacher - he explains what we do wrong on a snow plough turn - leaning back instead of forward - he even gave a very good imitation of how and what we beginners screw up. After about 30 minutes he says to Mags "why are you so serious?" She said "I am worried that I will be sent back!" He told her that her level was fine for this class and to enjoy herself!

Its Snowing, Uploaded by M+MD.

From there the class went very well. We managed to go down the start of Piste D a couple of times and although I did get very nervous on one occasion when there were lots of little kids around - I got though that and was fine. I mastered side slipping until my ski fell off and I lost the group! But by then, it was nearly 12 and I went back to the meeting point. The sky was now blue and the day was just wonderful.

We met up with the girls and Senan and caught the Belvedere lift to the restaurant Le Vaffieu which we remember from last year because of the stange translations of some of the local dishes on the english menu. This time we want to get photographic evidence. What we remember is one item which was called "horsedung of goats cheese" Alas the menus had been changed. So you just have to take our word for it. After lunch we had a couple of rounds of Nabor and I headed down early. Mags and the others stayed up for a while longer. They skied home on Piste B - I am impressed. I just lazed around and drew a little.

After a big breakfast we got a lift to the shop to collect the skis. There was a very long queue for the bubble.

Dobeys and Salibas, Uploaded by M+MD

Eventually we got up too and found Francine. She said that her group was very slow, but to be honest after the 'trauma' (!?!?) of yesterday afternoon I was ready for slow and basic. So we went around with 3rd day (they started lessons on Sunday) slow beginners and while it was slow and there was a lot of waiting as predicted, it was such a confidence boost not to be at the back of the class and just to hear again exactly how to do the basics. We did snow-plough turns and we were supposed to start side-slipping but we ran out of time for that. At the end Francine spoke to Joseph and got me back into the advanced beginners class again! It was such a relief to be promoted! This time we didn't have such a large lunch, we just got chips and a sandwich at the top of the bubble.

In the afternoon we did a couple of rounds of the easy Nabor run. Then both Mags and I were wrecked - I was afraid that I would loose all the confidence building of the morning if we did too much. So we went down and left the girls to it. We were pretty crocked when we got off the mountain. Even when we had our boots off we found the simple act of walking difficult. It was with difficulty and at a very slow pace that we walked back to the chalet. Ronan had cooked a serious choclate cake - he had even iced it "the Big Bad Choclate Cake".

We weren't there long when Senan arrived home on his own. They had skied down my dreaded Piste B and while Senan had enough the girls went back to do it again. The hot tub was a little cold at only 32.7 degrees. But the sauna was warmer. It all helped though we were pretty shattered.

Hot Tub, Uploaded by M+MD.

Dinner was as magnificant as the night before. A nice bottle of wine after and some sitting and chatting. We were even sorer than yesterday and were ready for bed by 10.0. Dr Chris (as he has now been christened) had brought that tube of magic called deep heat. I put a little on before going to bed. But I was so weary I could really figure out the difference between the bits that were tired and the bits that were sore. When I woke up at 5 am on Wednesday morning to go to the loo, I could tell the difference and so I applied it to all of the sore bits. When I got up for breakfast two and a half hours later I felt like a new man. - almost no sore bits at all - magic ready to do battle with the slopes again..

Morzine 2008 - Day 2 - Monday 24 March

8.30 am

Just finished breakfast. Waiting for the bus. The Salibas arrived last night and settled in after their odyssey. Roisin is all wound and ready to ski! The shuttle will arrive shortly to bring us to the ski shop. There we will get our gear and get the bubble up to Pleney where the classes start.

Looking up to Pleney from Morzine, Uploaded by M+MD.

12.00 noon

Up on Pleney at the end of the first day of lessons. It was a nightmare start. We waited in class 2 since we did beginners last year. Then our teacher from last year arrived - Marie-Helene - great, we thought, she is teaching class 2. So we head off and in order to test our ability they immediately get us all to parallel ski down a fairly steep slope. Myself and Mags were the last 2 in the group to go down the slope. Mags made it about a third of the way of the way down before she fell. Then I followed I got about half way before I fell the first time. I got up again but didn't get very far before I fell again. This time it was harder to get up. In the meantime the instructor was going back up to Mags.

Pleney - Top of the Bubble, Uploaded by M+MD.

I was told to take off my skis and walk down. I was then told to make my way down to the Mouilles lift and find a lower group. There was no sign of Mags. I made my way back with my tail between my legs! I couldn't find anyone at first so after waiting 10 minutes to see if Mags would follow I did the Nabor run just to settle myself and see if I could find anyone.

On the second circuit I found Mags. She was in an advanced beginners with an instructor called Joseph. He let us join a little reluctantly. "Stay with uz for now but I will find you a new class for to-morrow." I guess we were just happy to have a home. Mags had had an even worse experience than me down that first test slope - when the instructor reached her he told her to take off her skis and walk back to the meeting point and find another class. On top of that her boots were too tight and she had no real feeling in her feet. So we just tagged along - Joseph was in the middle of learning every body's name, but as we were leaving he explained that his brain was too full and he didn't need to learn our names as we were not going to be with him to-morrow. "So I will just call you Man and Lady". Just what we needed to boost our already low self-esteem.

The lesson ended and Joseph passed us over to Francine. "My class is very full but ok, I will see you to-morrow." We were suitably humbled but at least we had got through the first day and we remembered quite a bit even if we were probably not even Class 1 level. We rang Deirdre and arranged to meet up.

2.30 pm La Chamade, Restaurant

We had excellent pizza cooked in a wood burning pizza oven and in fact ate too much - Ronan our chef was cooking Chicken in Tarragon tonight, where were we going to put it all! After food we headed back up the bubble for a private easy lesson with Deirdre and Chris.

"The Bubble" Uploaded by M+MD.

3.00 pm Back on Pleney

Chris took Senan Lisa and Katy with Roisin and Katie down Piste B and Mags Deirdre and I followed after. Dee have is some useful guidance on Snow plough turns - "look down the mountain". Plus put pressure on the uphill ski, soon to be downhill ski, hand on knee (shifting weight) and across. (Easy isn't it!) Mags got it with just a few falls but every time I looked down the mountain I got completely spooked and leaned back - which has the effect of increasing the speed and losing control followed by complete panic and a fall. A complete wipe out as Deirdre would call it. I tried again a few times but now I was getting tired and the trick of looking down the mountain before you make a turn was just a little too hard. I was also feeling tired and remembering that the last day I skied I badly pulled a muscle in my leg which finished my skiing for the last few days. Anything vaguely steep on this Blue run now looked Black to me..

In the end I did the only sensible thing - I took off my skis and walked down the mountain. At the next flat bit I skied again. But as soon as it got "steep" (all in my head) the skis were off. I told Mags and Dee to go on ahead and that I would see them at the bottom. It was a long run and a long trudge down dragging skis and poles. Eventually it looked ok enough to try again and I managed to ski the last mile or so home.Relief was great when I could see Mags and Dee waiting patiently at the bottom. At least I got back up again and to-morrow is another day. As the song goes "he who fights and runs away will live to fight again". Chris and the kids had no problems and were gone up to come down again.

4.30 bottom of the mountain

We headed home. The hot-tub and sauna did the trick and by dinner-time I was feeling human again. We ended up the night with another bottle of wine and a game of Charades - the adults against the kids - it was a draw! Shattered and with weary legs we went to bed.

Morzine 2008 - Day 1

Sunday 23rd March, 11.15 am Dublin Airport

Waiting to board for Geneva. Just a low level of excitement and anticipation. A little airport shopping - 2 pairs of sun glasses for the price of 1 - only question is who gets the fee pair. We are sitting beside the gate so we get to board first. Please turn off all mobile phones - so next installment from Geneva!

3.00pm (local time) Geneva Airport
Can you believe it our four pieces of luggage came out first and together!Might be a good omen. There has been lots of snow in Morzine and there is more forecast all week. Just heard from Deirdre - they are delayed in Luton for 2 hours snow!

4.10 On the road to Morzine.
Its snowing as we drive - there is plenty of light snow In the fields and on the rooves but nothing is sticking on the road .....yet. Its a nice start to skiing holiday and very different from last year when it was bright sunshine in the valley and plenty of snow up top.

4.45 Just over the top of the road at Les Gets.
The road is clear with loads of snow even a bit of blue sky. Should be there in 10 minutes, the anticipation is mounting.

Ronan our Chef is working away and Peter our host has us sipping mulled wine while the smell of the cooking is in the air. Dee and Chris are on the way but they also had a delay waiting for transfers. So we are going to go ahead and eat and they will eat later. I'd better stop writing now - the natives Are getting restless - blogging is anti-social I am being told.
